2012 Emmys Winners Announced

The 64th Primetime Emmys were given out on September 23, 2012, in a ceremony broadcast live on ABC. ABC’s Modern Family once again won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series, while Showtime’s Homeland took honors for Outstanding Drama Series. Produce Richard D. Zanuck, son of Hollywood legend Darryl F. Zanuck, has died at age 77 of a heart attack. He was the recipient of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Irving G. Thalberg Award, and was co-producer of the 72nd Academy Awards ceremony in 2000.

Origin of the name of the Emmy Awards

The term “Emmy” is a feminization of “Immy”, which is short for the image orthicon tube, which was originally built to guide flying explosive weapons in World War II. The image orthicon tube was too unreliable for use in weaponry, but was later adapted for television technology.
