The One Club is accepting entries for the One Screen Film Festival, a global short film and video competition. This festival was created by The One Club to create a forum for creatives in the advertising industry and filmmakers alike to showcase their projects.

The Paley Center for Media is accepting entries for entries for its Art of the Documentary Pitch Workshop at PALEYDOCFEST2012, to be held at the Paley Center in New York City on October 20, 2012. Pitches from five preselected filmmakers who are hoping to sell either a nonfiction concept or a documentary work-in-progress will be evaluated by the judging panel; the winner will receive a $5,000 grant to be used towards the completion of the project.

Producer Richard D. Zanuck dies at age 77

Richard D. Zanuck, 1934-2012

Produce Richard D. Zanuck, son of Hollywood legend Darryl F. Zanuck, has died at age 77 of a heart attack. He was the recipient of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Irving G. Thalberg Award, and was co-producer of the 72nd Academy Awards ceremony in 2000.

Camden (Maine) International Film Festival, Points North Pitch calls for entries

The Camden International Film Festival (CIFF) seeks submissions for its 3rd Annual Points North Pitch session, an event that runs concurrently with CIFF from September 27 through 30, 2012 in Camden and Rockland, Maine.

The Points North Pitch is for documentary filmmakers, who may submit a trailer or clip of no more than five minutes in length by August 31, 2012. Six finalists will be chosen to present their work-in-progress films to a visiting industry delegation on September 29th, 2012.

Philadelphia Film & Animation Festival, 21-Day Film call for entries

Project Twenty1, a 501(c)3 non-profit arts organization, is accepting entries of live-action and animated shorts, features, and music videos for the annual international Philadelphia Film & Animation Festival. The Festival will accept pre-existing work; however, Project Twenty1 also runs the 21-Day Filmmaking Competition, an international contest where teams of animators and filmmakers must create an original short based on a common secret “Element” in the allotted time of 3 weeks.

The 84th Academy Awards ceremony was broadcast live on ABC on the evening of February 26, 2012. It may have been the best night for France in Hollywood since they filmed the Marseillaise scene in Casablanca, with The Artist taking 5 Oscars, including Best Actor in a Leading Role (Jean Dujardin), Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius), and Best Motion Picture. The French theme even extended to the award for Best Original Screenplay, which went to Woody Allen for Midnight in Paris.

Crossing the Channel, as it were, for the other major award, Meryl Streep was named Best Actress in a Leading role for her portrayal of Lady  Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Christopher Plummer made history at age 82, becoming the oldest actor to win an Oscar, for his Best Supporting Actor work in Beginners.

The Sant Bani School of Sanbornton, New Hampshire, is hosting New England’s first ever Swede Fest Film Festival. A sweded film is a summarized, low-budget recreation of a popular movie, starring the maker of the film (the sweded version, not the original.) The Festival is open to young filmmakers in grades 7-12.

27th Spirit Awards winners announced

Film Independent announced the winners of the 27th Spirit Awards at a ceremony held in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica, California. The Weinstein Company’s The Artist was the big winner, coming away with awards for Best Feature, Best Director, Best Male Lead and Best Cinematography. The Weinstein Company also took the Best female Lead award for My Week With Marilyn. Fox Searchlight got in the way of a Weinstein sweep by picking up the Best Screenplay award for The Descendants.

43rd annual NAACP Image Awards Announced

Described by its sponsors as “…the nation’s premier event celebrating the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in the arts (television, recording, literature, motion picture and writing & directing)”, the NAACP Image Awards were broadcast live on NBC on February 17, 2012. Cinema Eye Honors for nonfiction filmmaking announced that the 2012 Legacy Award will be presented to the 1967 documentary, Titicut Follies.
