World Press Photo has announced the winners of its 2013 World Press Photo awards, with Swedish photographer Paul Hansen’s photo of the funeral procession for two Palestinian children taking top honors as Photo of the Year. It was originally published in Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

The Adobe Foundation is accepting entries for the second Adobe Youth Voices (AYV) Aspire Awards,  described by its sponsors as “…a global, online challenge inviting youth to creatively express their vision for driving change in local communities.” There are 8 standard content categories, and a special category, the UNICEF Challenge, for video proposals for a project that entrants would like to launch in their local communities.

Jewish Heritage Museum calls for photography exhibit entries

The Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County, New Jersey, has announced a call for entries for a juried photography exhibit. The exhibit will focus on photographs that represent Monmouth County’s Jewish experience.

The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers, working in film or digital format. The professionals will be judged separately from the amateurs. Images must have been photographed in Monmouth County to qualify, although there is no residency requirement for participants. Call for entries: West Virginia Juried Exhibition

The West Virginia Division of Culture and History is calling for entries for its biennial West Virginia Juried Exhibition. There will be an awards ceremony and opening reception at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Stifel Fine Arts Center at Oglebay Institute in Wheeling. The show will remain on display through Jan. 2, 2012.

The Exhibition is for works created in the past two years in the areas of painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, photography, mixed media and crafts. Entrants must be permanent residents of West Virginia, and 18 year of age or older. The deadline for entries, in the form of slides or digital images, is July 18, 2011.

NSF, Science Visualization Challenge Call for Entries

The National Science Foundation (NSF) and the journal Science announced the call for entries for the Visualization Challenge, recognizing innovative work in visual communication.

NSF and Science will appoint judges to select winners in each of five categories: Photography, Illustrations, Informational Posters and Graphics, Interactive Games and Videos. Winning entries will be will be displayed on the NSF website, and published in Science and Science Online.

Travel Photographer of the Year

Travel Photographer of the Year (TPOTY) is accepting entries. Winning and other highly-placed images appear in the TPOTY ‘Journey’ series of books and are exhibited at the Royal Geographical Society in the UK. Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize

The National Portrait Gallery in London, England, is calling for entries for the 2011Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize, a major international photographic award.

The prize contest is open to all photographers over the age of 18; the online application form is available at NPG Photoprize. Of the 60 or so photographers selected for exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, one will receive an award of £12,000. The exhibition will run at the National Portrait Gallery, from Nov. 10, 2011 until Feb. 12, 2012.

Also, ELLE magazine will commission a photographer selected for the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize exhibition to shoot a feature story for the magazine.

The closing date for entries is July 7, 2011.
